Ajit Agarkar’s Position Under Threat? BCCI Reportedly Considering VVS Laxman as Chief Selector
According to multiple media reports, the future of India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar is no longer guaranteed. While it was previously believed that his tenure would be extended until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup, recent developments surrounding Rohit Sharma's future and India's disappointing performances have reportedly forced the BCCI to reconsider its plans.
Although no official decision has been made, reports claim that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is evaluating whether former India batter VVS Laxman should take over as the chairman of selectors.
Rohit Sharma Episode Reportedly Changed the Situation
One of the major reasons behind the reported uncertainty is the controversy that unfolded during India's England tour.
Media reports claimed that news regarding the possible end of Rohit Sharma's ODI career surfaced publicly just before the second ODI against England. Soon after, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that as long as Rohit remained part of India's plans, he would continue to represent the national team.
The situation became even more complicated when Rohit responded with a magnificent 138-run century in the third ODI. While India eventually lost the match, Rohit's performance reportedly raised fresh questions about the selectors' long-term plans.
According to reports, some BCCI officials believe VVS Laxman, who currently heads the Centre of Excellence, could be a stronger choice to lead the selection committee.
The belief is that Laxman's experience and stature in Indian cricket would command greater respect within the dressing room. Reports also suggest that senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would be more receptive to discussions under Laxman's leadership.
However, sources indicate that these discussions remain at a preliminary stage. A final decision is expected to be considered during the BCCI Annual General Meeting scheduled for September.
Agarkar Still in the Race
Despite the speculation, Ajit Agarkar has not been ruled out.
Reports suggest that the BCCI is still weighing two options: extending Agarkar's tenure by another year with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind or appointing a new chief selector.
Interestingly, media reports claim that India's upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka could influence the board's final decision. A positive result may strengthen Agarkar's chances of receiving an extension.
The report further claims that several members of the selection panel believe India should begin preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup without Rohit Sharma. According to these reports, discussions regarding Rohit's future had already taken place during the England tour.
However, once reports suggesting that the Lord's ODI would be Rohit's final match sparked widespread debate on social media, the BCCI publicly clarified that Rohit would continue to play as long as he remained part of the team's plans.
The contrasting developments have reportedly led to differences of opinion regarding the team's long-term direction.
Review Meeting Yet to Take Place
India's disappointing performances in England and Ireland have also come under focus. The team reportedly lost eight of its ten matches across the two tours, and a review meeting was expected after the England series.
However, according to BCCI sources quoted in media reports, the meeting has been delayed due to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia's illness. The review is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with head coach Gautam Gambhir likely to join the discussions online.
At this stage, no official announcement has been made regarding Ajit Agarkar's future as India's chief selector. While reports indicate that VVS Laxman has emerged as a strong contender, the final decision is expected only after internal BCCI discussions and the upcoming Annual General Meeting.
Until then, the future of India's selection committee remains one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket.
